I’ll never forget the day my 7 year old son said that he wished that he could slide up the string that held my kite so high in the sky. He said that he wanted to ride the kite so he could see above the trees! That’s when my fascination began all over again for kite flying. It’s amazing how you live you childhood all over again through your kids! We went to this awesome hobby store that’s been around forever and went into the kite section. This place is huge! Remote controlled planes and cars, pottery supplies, paint supplies for artists and , yes, even candle making. We found the section where they were selling the kites and found this sweet stunt kite with two strings to control it. We have a camper on Lake Ontario, where the wind is pretty constant. Well it was the best experience me and my boys have had. This thing swooped and darted and they picked up the knack for flying one of these beasts! They eventually wanted their own stunt kites so we can all fly together. Actually, I think they were miffed that I hogged most of the airtime!

Last summer we were up at the lake and my friend,JC, had his little guy out in the grass in the big open area that was perfect for flying a kite. His son, Anthony, was flying his firetruck Kite.

He is 6 years old and of course, didn’t quite get the geometry involved in judging where the kite is in the sky compared to what would happen if it took a dive. This thing was high up, I mean really high up!

They were at the end of the kite string when a change of wind occurred. This thing ended up in a death-dive down over a semi-circular line of campers, over a road, power lines and eventually over on top of the little office for the Marina the RV park was attached to. I was lounging listening to “Redneck Yacht Club” when I saw this whole thing happen. I immediately ran behind my camper, up a flight of stairs, over the road and followed the sting to the kite that was hung up on the roof of the office. After much harsh words, and worries that a car would come along and clip the string, I was in a panic…yelling at JC to pick up the slack and back up. I got the firetruck kite off the roof and the wind was just right and it tried to fly out of my hand. My friend pulled in the slack, I launched the kite straight up: ” CLEAR!” and up it went, just as fast as it came down and pulled free of the power lines, trees and campers it was all tangled up in! his son said, ” Daddy, LET’S DO IT AGAIN!!!”

We had a huge laugh, a beer and was confident in the knowledge that this incident would go down in kite history. We ‘ll be telling this to our grand kids, with a little exaggeration, I’m sure.This is the kind of great experience you get when you fly your kites. Kids, Friends,and great times to talk about afterward.
